Disability Benefits Scotland

Every year 34,500 people in Scotland will be diagnosed with cancer and many will be entitled to Adult Disability Payment, Pension Age Disability Payment or Child Disability Payment, with support also available for unpaid carers. The payments are available to help people with a disability or long-term health condition to cover extra costs like transport or care equipment.

Adult Disability Payment is available to people in work and eligibility is not based on employment, income or savings. People who are terminally ill automatically receive the highest rates of disability payments they are entitled to, and there are no award reviews.

Carers might also be entitled to financial support. Carer Support Payment is available to carers who are aged 16 or over and who provide unpaid care for 35 hours or more a week to someone who receives a qualifying disability benefit. Alongside this, carers will receive Scottish Carer Supplement, and might be eligible for Carer Additional Person Payment too if they care for more than one person.
