Planning your summer holiday with cancer

Written by Becca Guiller on 3rd July, 2026

At this time of year, it’s common to seek a break from our day to day and look to enjoy some time abroad. Planning any holiday can have its stress factors, but if you have recently been given a cancer diagnosis, the likelihood of securing affordable travel insurance so that you can get away safely can quickly put a stop to your plans.

Getting away is beneficial for both our physical and mental health, so if you are in recovery from treatment, the very thing you need may seem unattainable. Thankfully, we spoke with Fiona from travel insurance brand Insurancewith, who lives with secondary breast cancer.

When talking about the benefit of going away on holiday for people with cancer, she said:

“You can just be you. You go to a different place and you are away from home and everything that reminds you of cancer. Just getting away from the illness routine and cancer admin. And you just feel better in the warm weather as well.”

Having had two separate cancer diagnoses in her life and a chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy treatment, she understands how limiting travel insurance options can be but how much cancer patients need and deserve the respite. When talking with Fiona she said:

“When I was having my treatment, I would sit in the chemotherapy room with everybody and we would all talk about how when our treatment was over we would go on holiday.

Then when my treatment was over, my oncologist said you have a bit of a treatment break now go on a family holiday before we do your surgery and radiotherapy.

I worked in insurance at the time, although not specifically travel insurance so I knew it would be tricky to get travel insurance but I didn’t realise that I’d be completely uninsurable because I hadn’t physically had the cancer removed.

That shocked me because I understood risk, but I couldn’t understand why I was deemed completely uninsurable.

That’s when I thought, I had to do something about this.”

As a result of Fiona’s experience, she created travel insurance brand Insurancewith.

Insurancewith is a corporate supporter of Cancer Card and we are proud to have them in our online directory and know that those who have used the service have fantastic things to say about it. Dave is one of the many examples of cancer patients who have found Insurancewith invaluable. He said:

“This year we have taken out our annual holiday insurance with Insurancewith as a direct result of seeing it on the Cancer Card site. Our previous insurer was charging just over £1,000 a year and Insurancewith gave me a personalised policy for £290 with Cancer Card discount covering Europe. Next year we are planning to go back to the USA and Insurancewith are going to cover us. This opened doors for us which I thought were permanently closed due to my condition. To say we are more than happy would be an understatement.

Insurancewith clearly looks beyond the diagnosis and focuses on helping not penalizing the person. I can’t recommend them enough.”

If you have cancer and are looking to get travel insurance, Insurancewith may be able to consider cover for you too. You can also try the Money Helper Website’s Travel Insurance Directory, which helps you find a travel insurance provider if you have a serious medical condition or disability.
